You don't have to worry about any previous software, because Nightfall will come with installation disks. Alternately, you could download the client for free at http://www.guildwars.com and let it update itself so you can start right away without having to go through a bunch of updates when you actually get the game.
With Guild Wars, you aren't really paying for the means to access the game so much as you're paying for the right to access the game. So don't worry about downloading and installing anything unless you want the client to update itself before you begin to play, in which case...
Download the client, install it, open it up and leave it sitting at the login screen. Anything it needs to update will do so while it's sitting there. You can also use the -image switch to download and decompress everything for the game. To do that, right-click on the Guild Wars shortcut, and in the Target box under the Target tab, it'll say something like "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"
Add a space, a dash, and the word "image" to the end of that, so it looks like "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image
This will force the game to download and decompress everything, then just remove the "-image" after it's done to be able to open it normally again. By doing this, you'll have it fully updated and ready to go when you start.
Note, however, there's probably going to be a lot more to download once Nightfall is released, so make sure to put in the -image switch again after you've played to get the most recent updates.
